Firefighters from the Nehalem Bay Fire and Rescue District responded to a fire on 5th Street in Wheeler at about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Mar. 28. By the time firefighters arrived the unattached double-car garage was engulfed in flames. The fire originated in the engine of the automobile parked inside. Homeowner Robert Klinkensmith had just returned home and parked the car inside the garage when he noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood. Flames quickly engulfed the automobile, he said. The garage and the vehicle were a total loss and the exterior wall and roof of the adjacent doublewide manufactured home were also damaged by the fire.
